I consider myself to be very blessed to be apart of a group of photographers that just simply light up my life with laughter, support, guidance, laughter… did I mention laughter? Some of us are lucky enough to live within driving distance of each other, so we can meet up every once in a while and get creative together. Last weekend, we did just that. Five of us (From left to right: Kory Zuccerelli, ME, Tatiana Lumiere, Tom Newforge and Robert Cornelius) met up in PA with our model Yana Shu.
We all (for the most part) met on Facebook, and/or where introduced to each other through someone we met on Facebook. Get the picture? Good. You would think that when you meet people for the first time, you say your standard “Hello” “Nice to finally meet you face to face” – Well not us. It was big burly hugs all around. It was like we have know each other for YEARS, and we just haven’t seen each other in such a long time.
Surround yourself with people that are like minded and creative!
Photography, or Art for that matter can be a very lonely job. For me, its a very personal process. I look at everything around me and get inspired, but then I have to dig deep within the noise that is in my head to figure out a way to make sense of it all. It takes time to generate and idea, and then figure out how its going to work. The awesome things is that once you get an idea, you have surrounded yourself with people who think just like you, who can help you make that idea a reality. Whether it be flipping a dress, holding a reflector, or even suggesting posing ideas to help you tell your story.
The day always starts off the same, BIG HUGS hello, and then off to the shooting location. Once we are there, we all pop our trunks for a little show and tell. We spend the next hour matching up dresses and props: “Yes, this dress with this sword” “OOOooo I love that cape” “Tell me your brought tan pants and suspenders” “Do you have a book I can set on fire? “I brought smoooooke boooooombs… yea!!!!”
What had happened was!
So my picture I created, as usual, has a mind of its own. I had a VERY clear idea of the one image I wanted to shoot and somewhere between the park in PA and my desk in NJ, the photo decided to do a 180 and turned into something else. I always end up liking that idea more. Did I mention it was FREEZING out? The windchill easily had us at 30 degrees! Poor Yana, our only model, was SUCH an amazing trooper. No matter what our ideas where, she was down! It was shortly after taking this photo that the park rangers came up and asked us what we were doing. I probably shouldn’t of had her screaming at the top of her lungs.
I wanted to name this picture “If A tree fell in the woods and no one was around would it make a sound? No, but Yana does when the wind blows and she is wearing a short mini dress” But I thought that was too long so I named it “Y” – because that is what she was screaming.
